Popular statistics we excluded

Not every pricing statistic online has a source. We checked each figure on this page on its original publisher’s page. These widely repeated numbers did not pass:

  • Amazon changes prices 2.5 million times a day. The figure comes from a 2013 vendor press release that is no longer online, and its method was never published.
  • A 1% price rise increases profit by 11%. Often credited to McKinsey, but we could not verify it on any freely accessible primary source. The McKinsey figures we could verify are 8% (2003) and 8.7% (2014).
  • 56% of US shoppers start product searches on Amazon. We could not find this exact figure in the original publisher’s reports.
  • Retailers spend 10 hours a week checking competitor prices by hand. The original 2019 vendor survey page is no longer available.
